Washington Women Mauled by Two Dogs

On Tuesday, August 21, two pit bull terriers came into a women's home through a pet door and attacked her while she was in her bed. The women was able to escape the dog attack after finding a gun and trying to shoot the dogs. Then she was able to make it to her car where she called 911.

The women who received the dog bites has been listed in critical condition after being taken to a Tacoma hospital. The pit bulls also killed a neighbors Jack Russel terrier after it entered the women's home during the attack. Officials think the Jack Russel came into the home when it heard screams from the women, and was then attacked and killed by the pit bulls.

Firefighters responded first, locking the dogs in the house, treating the woman and calling for an ambulance. Officers "had to pepper spray and fight the dogs until they were detained. We almost had to shoot them on site," Ed Troyer, the sheriff's spokesman, said.

It is not known why the dogs entered the home and what set off the attack, but either way the dogs have been sent to the human society and will most likely be put to sleep. Officers plan on talking to the dog's owner.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Case Settled against Park County School District No.6

A consultant employed with the State of Wyoming slipped and fell in an unmarked area which housed a small school auditorium. It was alleged that the entrance to the stairs leading to the seating area in the auditorium were improperly marked or, in some cases, not marked at all. William Simpson represented the Plaintiff in this case which was settled before action commenced.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer

Forest Service accepts responsibility for fire resulting from prescribed burn in Shoshone National Forest, Fremont County, Wyoming

The Shoshone National Forest scheduled a "prescribed burn" or "controlled burn" of National Forest properties in and around Fremont County , Wyoming in approximately mid-May, 2006. The controlled burn became uncontrolled -- and several residences on private property were partially or totally destroyed. Other residences/buildings were burned on Forest Service lease lands.

The controlled burn program has been put on temporary hold, pending further review and evaluation from Forest Service officials, and the Forest Service has acknowledged that procedure must be reevaluated and that they have responsibility for what occurred. The admission by the Forest Service in this regard is unusual. Should those homeowners who lost personal property choose to file a claim with the US Court of Claims in Washington, D.C., pursuant to the Federal Tort Claims Act, they will have 2 years from the date of the incident to file an administrative claim with the Forest Service, and then 6 months from any denial of the claim to file in Federal District Court.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer

Olive Glenn Country Club in Cody to Receive Face Lift

Country club members pledge improvement money - By Regina Purcell (Cody Enterprise)

Nearly $400,000 has been pledged by members of the Olive Glenn Golf and Country Club for much-needed improvements to the facility.

Built in the 1970s by the late Olive and Glenn Nielson, the 18-hole championship course was turned over to members in the mid-1980s, according to general manager Dave Snyder.

He said improvements to the property haven't kept up in recent years, so last spring members set a goal of raising $500,000.

The Olive Glenn Capital Improvement Committee was formed and Snyder said the first donation came in last summer.

He said members since have pledged $396,000 toward improvements.

"The financial condition of the club is fine,"

Snyder said.

"We haven't made any capital improvements in a number of years, but we're fortunate our members have stepped up."

Click here to see the full article.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer

How Much Improvement for $24.5M

Many believe $24.5 million to improve habitat around the Jonah natural gas field outside Pinedale would be helpful, but some are questioning how much an improvement there will be.

Linda Baker with the Upper Green River Valley Coalition said EnCana Oil and Gas Inc.'s pledge of the millions in exchange for large-scale drilling may not go far, as the habitat outside Jonah appears to be

"in pretty good shape."

"There's place for some degree of success with off-site mitigation,"

Baker said. But she said habitat outside Jonah supports one of the country's largest populations of mule deer and antelope and a cattle industry.

"There's no indication of to what degree mitigation will occur, what they will do and how far beyond they will improve it,"

she said.

Off-site mitigation was voluntarily proposed by EnCana. The company offered varying amounts based on how much surface area it could disturb on the 31,000-acre Jonah Field. More on-site disturbance -- like that proposed in the Bureau of Land Management's preferred alternative -- meant more off-site mitigation money. Less total disturbed acres on the field meant the company was engaging in on-site mitigation, coming at a price on site, according to EnCana.

The money would be donated and spent over the next 10 years, and would be managed by a group of wildlife and habitat agencies, including the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Possibilities for the mitigation include prescribed burns to rejuvenate habitat and restoration of native habitat.

Vern Stelter, habitat coordinator with the Game and Fish Department, said the agency does not know how effective the off-site mitigation will be, but, "we are assuming it will be effective."

"This is something we're going to learn more as we go, because this is the first time we've applied off-site mitigation in Wyoming,"

Stelter said.

As far as habitat, that area has just come out of several years of drought, and there are areas that could benefit from some work."

Randy Teeuwen, community relations advisor for EnCana, said

the goal is to create a "net positive impact" on Jonah and surrounding areas.

We're going to mitigate surface disturbance by our off-site funds so we can protect the environment and eventually bring the Jonah Field back to the way it was,"

he said.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer

Jail, Officer Sued On Behalf Of Inmates

The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit on behalf of two inmates from Wyoming against a New Mexico corrections officer, the jails wardens, the county commisioners and the jail's management company.

The lawsuit claims sexual abuse and cruel and unusual punishment by Detention Officer Brian Orr of the McKinley County (N.M.) Detention Center. The complaint was filed on behalf of inmates Sheila Black and Christine Herden.

The ACLU alleges that Orr repeatedly sexually assaulted the two women and photographed them in the nude, causing physical injury and severe psychological and emotional distress.

The complaint also alleges that the jail's acting warden, Gilbert Lewis, the McKinley County commissioners and the Centerville, Utah, company that managed the jail, Management and Training Corp., were negligent for failing to properly train and supervise Orr.

The Jackson Hole Star-Tribune has more on the lawsuit.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer
